Say the word, “Hemingway”, and author Ernest Hemingway, a man as colorful as was talented, quickly comes to mind. But did you know that the word “Hemingway” also refers to any six toed cat?

It seems that Ernest Hemingway bought a six-toed cat of a sailor who met in Key West. Hemingway was very fond of polydactyla (the proper term for cats with more than five toes) and as a result, is happy when many of their descendants are polydactyla too.

Now, I might have already known this interesting bit of trivia, if I had taken advantage of opportunities in Key West timeshares. Key West is not only a great place to enjoy some sun and just relax, is also home to “Papa” Hemingway Museum and is just the sort of picturesque town that many visitors to the Keys to include in an afternoon of tourism.

The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum is a tribute to the author’s life, especially in the years that passed as a resident of Key West. Winner of both the Nobel Prize in Literature and the Pulitzer Prize, Hemingway lived in Key West for about ten years between 1929 and 1939.

Today the museum is known for offering a glimpse into the life of Hemingway, an archive of some of his memories and a home for multiple generations of multi-toed cats that are descendants snowball, Hemingway’s original six-toed cat.

The Hemingway cats have been in the news lately because they are trapped in a government bureaucracy. Last year, U.S. Department of Agriculture said the Hemingway Museum to expose cats without proper credentials, namely an animal welfare license issued by the USDA. The USDA position is that the museum will exhibit the cats (there are about 50 at last count) as a zoo and, hence, must keep the cats in cages. Other articles suggest that new neighbors may simply be tired of living next to this large and growing population cat.
